Titan of the Month July 2024 – Jon Wheeler

Jon Wheeler, Titan of the Month July 2024

Little bit about myself, I grew up in the Midwest and moved around a bunch over the last 20 years, making stops in Wisconsin, Chicago, Arizona, and now here in Baltimore. I am a big nerd, I love learning and experiencing new things. Love trying new restaurants, going on random outings/festivals. Most days, outside of the gym, I am either playing chess, running my kids around to various things (those girls are never satisfied,) or picking up a random hobby for the weekend/month. For work, I am currently a Risk Officer where I perform compliance/supervision for a wealth management team. I have a BS in Business Management and JD as well.

What led you to try CrossFit?

I mostly spent my free time going from work to the house to take care of the family. So, I did not make a lot of time for myself. I remember trying to take my daughter on a walk in a stroller and not wanting to do more than one-half mile at a time. So, I was lucky that my brother and his wife, who have been active in the CrossFit community for over 10 years, bought me a membership shortly after my second kiddo was born, to encourage me to get back on track physically. While that lasted a bit and I enjoyed it, I transitioned to working out at home for a few years. After a while I felt like I really was missing the social aspect of working out with people and a good structure with a sense of accountability of coming in on a routine. So, I joined back up at Titan.

Why do you continue to CrossFit?

I am always a glutton for punishment and not being able to move fast on the weekend after coming in throughout the week. But it is mostly the people. I really enjoy getting to know everyone and seeing people, even if it is a nod and what is up. Excellent group and wide range of personalities especially the 5:30am class.

Describe how your attitude towards health and fitness has evolved since you began your journey

I moved from wanting to just look good when I took my shirt off at the pool (still want this just not top priority.) Now I really try to take a long-term approach, what does old man Jon want to be able to do. So, I mostly try to be consistent week in and week out. It is better to show up and put out 70% effort than to not show up at all. Try not to put myself in a position to be hurt and that it is okay to take days off if the body needs it.

Share a memorable CrossFit moment that makes you laugh or puts a smile on your face

I have these two pictures of my kids from when they came into the gym during the 2024 Open, both are just hanging upside down on the rings while everyone is working out around them. Now they are crazy enough to keep asking to come in for the 5:30 am classes with me just to be around everyone and the dogs.

What are you proud of and why?

I remember when I started CrossFit back in 2017, that first time Justin Gerchalk took me through a foundation movement and trying to front squat 75lbs and having the struggle be real. Now every time I pick up the barbell, I just look back at how hard things were then and simply happy how over time I can move through most movements and the amount of progress I made and how much further I can still go.

What’s your advice for other CrossFitters or people looking to start?

Stay consistent early on to build good habits. Feel free to ask for help/questions. Everyone wants you to succeed in your goals.

Why the coaches chose Jon as Titan of the month

Since joining Titan he has become more and more immersed in our community. He is kind and courteous to coaches and fellow members. He asks for clarification when needed. His personality is sincere, quiet at times, but somehow knows the perfect timing for well placed comedic comments. Jon is as serious about his commitment to fitness as he is to his commitment to dress head to toe for themed crossfit WODs. He will talk with anyone, always says hi, and has the sweetest kids. Jon demonstrates consistency, hard work, smart work, team spirit and is all around good natured and fun to be around.
