Hi, I’m John! I am a 31-year-old foreign attorney who works at a law office in Timonium, Maryland. One of my favorite hobbies is cultivating my knowledge. As such, I am always looking for interesting articles on the internet or new books to read. I particularly enjoy horror movies, old films, true-crime shows, and philosophy books. I am also interested in learning more about different cultures. Therefore, a couple of years ago, I decided to learn French and Chinese-Mandarin just for fun. This peculiar hobby fueled me to the point of obtaining language proficiency certificates in those two languages. My native language is Spanish, but I must speak English on a daily basis. Despite my excitement about experiencing new cultures, I must say that it has been challenging getting used to living in this area and starting all over again. I think this has boosted my social awkwardness, but working out has helped me immensely to release such stress.
What led you to try CrossFit?
Prior to joining Titan, I tried going to the gym for a month or two. However, the constant environment of not interacting with others was not motivating. Therefore, I decided to retake CrossFit in the fall of 2023. I wanted to see better results and had started feeling particularly concerned about my weight gain, as it can be challenging to control your calorie consumption when you feel tempted by the variety of junk food put in the stream of commerce in the U.S. Not to mention the amount of stress and anxiety that I was dealing with as a foreigner. I needed to do something about it, and CrossFit seemed like the right choice.
Why do you continue to CrossFit?
I continued doing CrossFit because I like the sense of competition that exudes in every class. Even though I am not as nearly as athletic as the folks in my class, the inspiration is there, and it fuels your desire to bring the best to the WOD. Titan is such a great place to release your burdens after a long day at work and recharge your spirit. The people there are friendly and welcoming. That is precious for someone who is looking for a community in a new town.
Describe how your attitude towards health and fitness has evolved since you began your journey.
Since I started my journey, my self-esteem has improved. I feel healthier and in better physical condition than before. In my opinion, the key to a worthwhile living life is finding harmony between your mind, body and soul. As such, I include in my routines not only physical and intellectual activities, but also psychological therapy.
Share a memorable CrossFit moment that makes you laugh or puts a smile on your face.
One of my favorite moments at CrossFit has to be the last workout we did at the Reindeer Games. It was funny watching the titans pull each other on an improvised sleigh made of plates and ropes.
What are you proud of and why?
I am proud of the strength that I have acquired in my arms. When I first started working out at Titan, I was awful at pull-ups. I am still not perfect, but I have definitely noticed that now my arms are decently strong to pull my body up.
What's your advice for other CrossFitters or people looking to start?
My best advice to CrossFitters or people looking to start may sound cliché, but be patient with yourself and be consistent. Practice makes perfect, and things take time. Right now, you may not be as athletic as you would like to be, but if you give up just because you are still not good enough.

He takes coaching cues to heart and shows up each time wanting to be just a little better than the last time. He is focused on the long game and isn’t concerned with how much weight is on his barbell or how fast his time is. He just wants to do better and move better and he does. Every time. He has a smile for everyone and is supportive to his fellow athletes. He is a pleasure to have in class. We are very lucky to have John as part of our community.
